First of all, I love their shapes and brilliant colors - and I like the depth that can be achieved by using glazes - of which there were *many* on these particular works. I've just received notice that four (4) of my miniature paintings have been juried into the "Edmonds Fine Art Festival" for June 19- 21 in Edmonds, Wa. This is a very prestigioius art festival and Ia m honored to again have my work shown here. In addition, another painting of mine, although not a miniature has also been accepted in to the "Bothell LiveArts Festival", one of the oldest art festivals in the area. This is my second year having my work shown with this fine show. The dates are June 27-28th.

Trees, trees - everywhere! So MANY more trees to paint.

Phase#3 - Finally - one can see all the ridges in the mountain. Now, to work on the places where the tree shadows fall, and as soon as the slow-drying white is dry, I'll be adding shadows to Rainier also. And since the title "Spring Runoff" came to me last night, I thought I'd best add a stream - so there you have it, meandering through the trees. I might not work on this for a day or so, as I have two entries to get ready for the Magnolia Art Festival coming up soon. So much to paint, so little time. DOUBLE CLICK IMAGE FOR LARGER VIEW

Phase#4 - I quit for the day. Maybe more tomorrow. So, now on to a couple of paintings for the festival because for THIS day, I am alllllllll 'Rainiered' out! :) I am pleased with the way this is coming along and it does indeed seem to herald the coming of Spring.

Phase#5 - Almost done now. I've made some small alterations and am now down to the nitty-gritty detail work, the part that adds the 'sizzle' to a work of art. I do plan to finish that part this afternoon. Have to - the painting is being submitted to a healthcare facility for consideration. Anyhow, it will be posted as a completed work tomorrow, Monday the 6th. Phew. :)

A common phrase heard 'round these parts when the sun is shining, is the title of this painting. Those of us who live here and adore Mt. Rainier in all her glory are delighted to see her shimmering profile from anywhere in the area. Here's some local information from the National Park Service in case you're interested in learning a little more about this volcanic mountain.

Mount Rainier National Park encompasses 235,625 acres on the west-side of the Cascade Range, and is located about 100 kilometers (50 miles) southeast of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. Mount Rainier National Park is approximately 97 percent wilderness and 3 percent National Historic Landmark District and receives approximately 2 million visitors per year.

At 14,410 feet, Mount Rainier is the most prominent peak in the Cascade Range. It dominates the landscape of a large part of western Washington State. The mountain stands nearly three miles higher than the lowlands to the west and one and one-half miles higher than the adjacent mountains. It is an active volcano that last erupted approximately 150 years ago.

The park is part of a complex ecosystem. Vegetation is diverse, reflecting the varied climatic and environmental conditions encountered across the park’s 12,800-feet elevation gradient. Approximately 58 percent of the park is forested, 23 percent is subalpine parkland, and the remainder is alpine, half of which is vegetated and the other half consists of permanent snow and ice. Forest ages range from less than 100 years old on burned areas and moraines left by receding glaciers to old-growth stands 1,000 or more years. Some alpine heather communities have persisted in the park for up to 10,000 years.

Species known or thought to occur in the park include more than 800 vascular plants, 159 birds, 63 mammals, 16 amphibians, 5 reptiles, and 18 native fishes. The park contains 26 named glaciers across 9 major watersheds, with 382 lakes and 470 rivers and streams and over 3,000 acres of other wetland types. Of these vertebrates, there are 4 federally listed threatened or endangered species known to occur in the park, including 3 birds and 1 fish. Four other species historically occurred in the park, but their present status is unknown including: gray wolf, grizzly bear, Canada lynx, and Chinook salmon.

This is, just as it says - the artist's dinner from last Tuesday. I *adore* artichokes to eat, in addition to them being a particularly fascinating subject to paint. So, there you have it - a double duty vegetable!

New Studio Dawg!

Here's the newest addition to my studio, and so far - he hasn't discovered the paint tubes! His name is Izzy, and he is an adorable Chihuhua & Miniature Dachshund mix. He was a most welcome Christmas gift from my young art students and I am so happy to have him keep me company while I paint. He's just barely 2 months old and weighs in at a whopping 1#. He is expected to be no larger than 7# at adulthood. BIG guy, huh? Is that not a *cute* little face?

Today I juried the art show for one of my community's schools, Seaview Elementary. It was really so much fun, and I adored seeing all the imaginative art! The have a yearly arts program called "Reflections" and the kids do some really neat stuff! I was given the task of judging the 3rd through 6th grade work. There were about 40-50 entries, I think. The other judge rated the younger kids entries, although we conferred about each other's choices. I must say, I was pretty darned impressed with ALL of them. One little young man in the third grade, stopped by and asked me if I was a judge. Then he proceeded to tell me just *exactly* how long it took him to do the inked in scales on his dragon's tummy. I had to give him a good score, if only for sheer tenacity!

Turns out (which I did not find out until after the judging was completed) is that the piece I selected for first place, also won first place last year as well. A young man of 8 - he has outstanding skill at watercolor as well as pen/ink. His entry was of the Titanic - and he had all the details done SO well.

Anyhow, it was a real fun challenge from my daily grind - and certainly as a great thing to ease myself out of the 'exciting election withdrawl' that I've been experiencing lately.

Just last month, I had the great pleasure to stay in a wonderful little cabin outside of Sequim, on the Olympic Peninsula in the very northern part of my beautiful state. The weather couldn't have been lovelier, and the cabin as charming as one could imagine. This painting is from directly behind the cabin, where there are hiking trails up the mountainside. Washington State Lighthouses

These two are Lime Kiln in the San Juan Islands, and Mukilteo lighthouses respectively. Each painting is 9" x 12" and on 1.5" deep gallery wrapped canvas. Here's a little background on each of these lighthouses:

Lime Kiln
The San Juan Islands, located in the northwest corner of Washington State, are breathtaking gems on a gentle sea.

Lime Kiln lighthouse is located on the west side of San Juan Island, the largest island of the archipelago. The lighthouse gets its name from the limekilns built nearby in the 1860s. Their remains can still be seen today, just north of the lighthouse. Lime Kiln was also the last lighthouse to receive electricity, waiting until the 1940s, after World War II. The light was automated in 1962, and a chain-link fence topped with barbed wire was built around the lighthouse. Today, the tower flashes a white light once every five seconds. The two original keeper's dwellings can be seen in the woods west of the lighthouse.

Mukilteo - Sitting on a historic plot of land, flashing a white light once every five seconds, the Mukilteo Lighthouse guides ships on their way to Everett, Washington. Native American Indians originally used the land in this area as a site for a camp during the winter months. In fact, Mukilteo is a local Indian word for "good place for camping."

On May 31, 1792, during his exploration of the Puget Sound, Captain George Vancouver anchored his ship and came ashore at the point and named it Rose Point because of the wild pink roses, which covered the area. Later, Lt. Charles Wilkes of the 1838-42 U.S. Exploring Expedition changed the name to Elliot Point. It was on January 22, 1855 that Washington Territory Governor Isaac Stevens met with 82 chieftains representing 22 local tribes at the site and ironed out the Treaty of Point Elliot. Through the treaty, the Indian wars ceased, the Tulalip Indian Reservation was established, and white settlement of the area began in earnest. A copy of the treaty can be seen today at the Mukilteo Lighthouse.

Drum head painting - work in progress

No new daily paintings this week yet as I have been busy on a very special commission. I was asked to paint a 22" synthetic drum head to be used for display only on the front of a set of drums. The giftee wanted a view of the area he grew up in, the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho. So, this is Saddlebacks Lake and about phase 4. I expect to finish it in a day or two. So, I'd say he's a lucky musician to have such a caring and thoughtful girlfriend as to do this for him, wouldn't you? Here it is finished and installed on the drum. Looks great, he says!

Award Winner - Catherine Grabar

This charming young woman is Yekaterina Grabar (her Russian name) and she is a private student of mine. She won the very prestigious "Highest Achievement Award from the Art Department of Redmond High School", now her Alma Mater. Catherine had no idea she was to be given the award, so the smile I managed to capture on her face in my video at Graduation on the 11th of this month, is one of genuine surprise! All I can say is that she's a very talented painter and an extremely versatile artist. Yekaterina will be attending the University of Washington this Fall with a major in ....tah dahhhh.....ART!

Sunsational - San Juan Islands

Here are two just recently completed and are at the Oasis Gallery in Seattle.

The San Juans (as they are known here in the Northwest) comprise a small group of beautiful islands north of here and reachable by ferry service. Some of the prettiest sunsets in the entire Pacific Northwest can be found from the beaches of any number of these small islands. It's a wonderful area to be - the pace just seems slower. I'd love to live on a small island like one of these, but I'd have to win the lottery to do so. It's a bit pricey!

Tomatoes, Tomatoes, Tomatoes!

More tomatoes! Well, they were here, they looked 'paintable' to me and so I painted them! Maybe next time I'll paint sliced tomatoes. I've added a companion piece with green peppers to these tomatoes. They make a beautiful pair for a kitchen, dining area. Bright colorful - and framed in bright, white frames to compliment shiny white appliances!

Seattle Skyline in progress

Well, this is a bit of a departure for my usual style, but it's really been fun to do something a little different.

This work is for a show I am entering, "Red, White or Blue" and requires the artists to use a monochromatic palette with only the addition of black and white. Soooo, I selected white. At some point, I decided to add a vertical element to the work and it became a diptych. I mean, who could ignore the Space Needle? The Space Needle is a bit north of the downtown view I used for the skyline, so the diptych just *worked*.

These are both 4" x 6", oil on board. $100 each, unframed. I am absolutely nuts over tomatoes, especially tomatoes in summer - fresh from the vine. However, I've found a reasonable replacement, since summer seems to have deserted the Seattle area over the last few years, and at the very least - even when we have a few decent summer days, the growing season isn't long enough. But, I still need my 'tomato' fix. Costco sells tomatoes from a grower named "Campari" and I have to say, they are the BEST tomatoes ever! I am able to have the 'fresh from the vine' taste all winter long and have never been more pleased over store-bought tomatoes. Here's a link to their site. This is a beautiful little spot on the Oregon coast and while I don't know it's *official* name, I call it that because there was an eagle perched right in that tree. Wow, am *I* ever proud!!!
This is 17 year old Mariam Hovhannisyan and she is my latest pride and joy as she has just been selected as one of the 40 national finalists (and 1 of 10 in her age group) in the "Doodle for Google" contest!! Can you see me beaming??

Mariam had her first solo show last month where she sold 7 prints, 2 paintings and a commission! She's on her way! She has been a student of mine since she was about 10 years old and was taking prizes even back then, when I was the art director for the Boys and Girls Club. She won a regional competition sponsored by L'Oreal and I knew even back then that she was in for a career in the arts. And just last year, she won second place in her division at the Magnolia Summer Festival & Art Show here in Seattle. She'll be entering again this year. I can't wait!

She's been invited to travel to Googleplex in California for an expense paid visit for the finals. In addition, if she becomes one of the final 4, she wins a laptop! The grand prize winner gets a $10K scholarship and a $25K prize for their public school! So, please help me help her WIN and vote, starting Monday the 12th of May through the 18th!

These three pieces were juried into the Kenmore Fine Arts Exhibit. They are size 18x24", 5x7" and 16x20" respectively. They are all offered framed. The show runs through next Tuesday. I'm very pleased, particularly since this was my first time entering this show.

In addition, one of my young teen-age students received 'Honorable Mention' for her beautiful sculptured vase, free form in design with a Raku glaze. very nice, indeed. I'm quite proud of her, needless to say. Last month she and her sister also took 2nd and 3rd place in the youth division of the Magnolia Fine Arts Fair.

This is what I *often* see of my Northwest when I venture off to the beaches here. The clouds in the skies are grays with hints of blues and teeny splotches that lean towards purples spilling through what everyone calls 'gray'. The deep greens of the water - and depending on the time of day, can vary from a warm to a cool green. The reason I am told, is that we have much more flora growing in the water than further south. Must be true, because our water definitely smells more *oceany* than in California. That's the smell that everyone assumes is a fish smell, but it's not - it's decaying flora. This piece was shown in the Edmonds Art Walk for June and is being entered in a show having to do with the Northwest. If you have questions about this work, please email me here.

Artist of the Month, City of Woodinville - Exhibit photos

After being named "Artist of the Month" for the city of Woodinville I was invited to display my work there. This building is one of the most dynamic pieces of architecture I've see in a long time. The angles of the building itself are quite unique, but the natural lighting is incredible, and for our area, that's saying a lot. These are the photos taken at the City Hall of Woodinville just after I hung the paintings for the exhibit. The larger ones are displayed in the lobby, and the miniatures are in the display case. Woodinville has become quite famous for its wineries over the years and it a 'must see' stop for many folks traveling through the area. It's one of the premier upscale communities of the Northwest. Unfortunately, I had to hold some of my work back for an art walk on June 21 in Edmonds (my second this year) so it was difficult to decide which to display where - but I came to a fair compromise, I think. Anyhow, these are the display photos with me standing in front of my work!

"Coquille River Lighthouse" 8" x 16" oil on canvas

The word Coquille comes from the Native American word for the site - Koh-kel. The French explorer LaPerouse sailed past the area in 1796, and the first settlers arrived in 1853. The river seemed a natural location as a port for exporting lumber and other goods from the Coquille River Valley in Bandon, Oregon. The Coquille River empties into the Pacific Ocean. The river extends inland a great distance, and was a natural link to the virgin stands of timber in the area. The bar at the mouth of the river, formed by the interaction of the river and ocean, was a major obstacle for the ships entering the river. At times, only a few feet of water would cover the bar, but still vessels attempted to navigate the river in hopes of reaping the rewards that lay upstream. In 1880, Congress passed a bill providing for the construction of a jetty on the south side of the river’s entrance. The jetty created a clear channel in the river, prompting a rapid rise in the number of ships entering the river.

This is one of a current series of the Northwest's lighthouses - some in Oregon, some in Washington - all beautiful. Oftimes though, it stays all day casting a soft, beautiful glow over the whole area. This is very near Forks Washington

"Fog At Ruby Beach - 12" x 16" Oil on canvas

The highway near Forks hugs the Pacific coastline and offers some of our area's most stunning views. This is our famous Ruby Beach. It offers a dramatic combination of bleached driftwood and rock formations knows as Seastacks. The entire scene is shrouded in the early morning fog that usually hangs around til afternoon. When the fog lifts, you can see as far as your imaginatino can take you.

A beautiful shot of a beautiful spot is what inspired this painting. Ruby Beach is one of the most visited on our coast. It's in the northernmost area of the coastline, near Mora campground just out of Forks, WA. Its sister beach is named Rialto Beach and is just to the south of this one.

Dusk, Haystack Rock

Another beautiful view of one of my favorite places on the Oregon Coast. This painting gave me fits for a while and I finally had to set it aside for a while until the solution came to me. I Wanted to convey that still colorful but in a low-key-gray-sort-of-way that only comes as dusk settles on over the coast. I finally got it and am very satisfied with the result. "Dusk" is 8" x 24" on gallery wrapped canvas.

Edmonds Juried Art Accepted Miniature Work

I just received notice today that three of the four submitted miniature pieces I entered in the Edmonds, WA Fine Arts Festival have been accepted. I am so delighted about this. Although I've lived here for eons and attended the festival many, many times, I always seemed to forget when the entries were due and missed out. I got it together this year and submitted early! "Seattle Skyline"

This is my version of a view of which I am terribly fond, the beautiful Seattle Skyline. My, it has changed so much since I first moved here 35 years ago! The tiny white building just off to the left of lower center with the spire on top is the "Smith Tower" and was at that time, the tallest building in Seattle. Makes me laugh now to think about how strange that seems these days. It's totally dwarfed by sophisticated glass and marble buildings that reach far into the beautiful gray skies of Seattle. . .Space Needle on the far left, Seattle Center is the arches on lower right. And of course, that's Mt. Rainier in all her beautiful glory in the background, far right.

This painting is 10" x 20" but NFS at this time as I am doing a solo show in June, and also 2 other art walks in May and June. So, must hold back some local favorites for them.

This is another winter morning scene. Yessss, it's still snowing off and on here in the Northwest where we so rarely ever have snow. But the children are certainly taking advantage of the *snow days* off from school, even though the temperatures have been in the freezing zone - one can still find them outside making snowmen and finding hills to sled on. This is a miniature diptych of the gorgeous coastline that I often paint. Each canvas is 4 x 4". This is an area of the northern Washington coast, near Forks on the Olympic Peninsula. This little gem was such fun to paint. We rarely get snow in our area, but when we do it's lovely. The mountains and the passes though, that's a far different story. We've had a LOT of snow up there this year and the skiiers and children are thrilled with it all. Me? I like to *look* at it.
This painting is 4" x 6" , but alas, has been sold - right off the easel, so to speak.
